Discuss: Retro Games in a Modern World

Looking back at the games I played growing up and the games I play now, there is a night and day difference. It seems that modern games are so much easier and all people really care about is how good the graphics are. Have you plugged your old NES into your big screen TV? The graphics suck, but the games are still epic.

Let's face it, old 8-bit games are hard. Just this weekend I hookup up my NES to the TV and started playing Fester's Quest. I died within seconds. Back then you couldn't change the difficulty to easy, you were stuck with whatever the evil programmers of hell decided to do.

With the NES you had two buttons and the D-Pad. Simple, right?  But why does it seem that the old NES games are so hard? Maybe it's because you can't save whenever you want or maybe because you didn't have the ultimate gamer skills you do now.

What do you think?
Are retro games harder than modern games?

  1. They were more simplistic, but they were harder....
    If that makes any sense.

  2. Not only was it simple, but the art style was so much more conceptual back then (even though it was intentional sometimes), so it was a lot more fulfilling.

Think about it, if you're gonna want to sit down and play video games, first of all you probably don't want to mess around with a hundred different controls, wandering around in a 3D environment, trying to figure out where to go and what to do in bad lighting. But regarding the art style, it's like boring everyday realism (art style that should have entered video games), OR images made of bright colorful pixels abstracting the image, and letting your imagination fill in the dots.
