MOVIE: Everybody Walk the Dinosaur - Super Mario Bros. (1993)
Super Mario Brothers has one of the longest lasting history in video games, but what happens when Hollywood decides to turn it into a movie? Let's find out...
The Super Mario Brothers Movie was a 1993 movie based on the video game. However, the movie did not receive a warm welcoming like the game. The movie ended up with terrible reviews. If you want a synopsis on the plot visit this link Super Mario Bros. Movie.
This may be a movie Nintendo and Hollywood want to forget about, but I refuse! I think this is one of those movies that is so bad, it's so good. Heck, I even have a unopened box of the trading cards. To some people it was a disaster, bad acting, bad effects and trying to stay too close to the actual video game instead of trying to be creative with it. I disagree with that. I don't think it followed the game too close at all. It had elements from the video game and it had the main characters with of course a few of Mario's Nemesis' in it, like Big Bertha. But it wasn't Princess Peach who was in danger, it was Princess Daisey. (Which that part has always confused me, what the heck happened to Princess Peach?)
The one thing that I really don't like in the movie is Mushroom Kingdom. This is where I felt they strayed too far from the video game. It was too much of a dirty crazy city. It just didn't feel like the Mushroom Kingdom to me. Maybe if this is how it was because Bowser (Dennis Hopper) took it over but they could have shown flash backs of what it used to look like or something. But enough of the negative, I love this movie! Let's talk about the good stuff.
One of my favorite scenes in the movie that has stuck out to me ever since I saw it the first time when I was a child is the elevator scene with the Gombas and Koopas. Check out a clip here. I love the singing gombas and koopas. Cracks me up every time. This is also the part of the movie where Mario and Luigi's costumes FINALLY look like the actual video game characters.
The acting wasn't THAT bad. I mean some of the actors did a little bit of over acting, but hey, don't we all sometimes. One of my favorite characters is Toad. He has a funky hair cut and he is a rebel! That is not the Toad I know from the video games. I always pictured him as a meek, shy dude. He even sings, and gets himself thrown in jail, how bad ass is that?
To me this movie a cult classic and it will always have a special place in my heart and on my bookshelf. I suggest you pick this gem up. You can find it in the Wal-Mart $5 DVD Bin. So what are you waiting for?! Go get it already! Come on, how can you resist that smile?

I don't care what anyone says, this movie rules. I remember how excited I was when it came out and how excited I still am to watch it.
ReplyDeleteI agree...what the hell is up with Princess Daisy? WHERE'S PEACH!?
I suppose they figured there'd be a sequel so they'd leave Peach for that one. Oh well...
